Rio is unique, sadly - we ought to support these places so we can have a few more of them on the scene. The staff are really charming and not the normal dunces you find manning the counters at Vue (generalisation, of course). They show some really conscientious films along with a few blockbusters. It's a classy place with great snacks and a nice, homely feel. It's yet to be trendified like Electric in West London or Screen on the Green in North - there are no couches and high entrance fees. Just a really nice, down to earth place to kick back and watch a film

The Rio Cinema in Kingsland High Street is adored by residents of Dalston and visitors to the area alike. It shows a great mix of independent, foreign language and mainstream films at very reasonable prices.

There really should be far more independent cinemas like the Rio around. It's an absolutely brilliant place to see films, whether it be the latest releases or (best of all) old or independent films. The atmosphere is so much better than your local multiplex, with people really getting in to the film and cheering and applauding, and the concessions stand is so much better than your average popcorn-and-coke kind: they have cakes cups of tea and cakes! There is only one screen also, which is actually an advantage since there's no sound leaking in from next door screens and you know that everyone is there because they want to watch this specific film.
