Rio launches campaign to change bus stop name on Kingsland Road

The Rio Cinema in Dalston has launched a campaign to get their name incorporated into Kingsland Road bus stops.

The cinema are calling for people to sign their online petition, which they will present to Transport for London.

The cinema wrote: "There are two bus stops on Kingsland High Street which are very close to the Rio; currently, the southbound stop is called Shacklewell Lane and the northbound stop is called Sandringham Road. Locals are already in the habit of saying “get off at the Rio stop”, and yet Transport for London has rejected requests to incorporate the Rio’s name into those bus stops.

"This petition asks that the Rio Cinema be granted this tribute in recognition of its historical significance and importance to the Dalston community today.

"The Rio is the most prominent landmark building on Kingsland High Street. It is a Grade II listed building, and a cinema has existed on the site since 1909. Primarily known as a cinema, the Rio is a registered charity - not a commercial enterprise - and is engaged in a huge variety of educational activities for young and old alike. The cinema is the only social and educational resource truly open to the whole of Dalston’s diverse community.

"We, the undersigned, petition Transport for London to rename the bus stops adjacent to Rio Cinema on Kingsland High Street as a tribute to its cultural and historical significance; recognising its status as a local landmark, and its continuing importance in Dalston and Hackney."
