Something & Son have created FARM:shop, a concept that puts farming at the centre of the city.
After three months of hard work, volunteers have transformed a disused shop on Dalston Lane, into an indoor farm.
The farm, on 20 Dalston Lane, consists of growing rooms, fish tanks for tilapia and giant freshwater prawns, a chicken coop on the roof and green houses growing tomatos.
It weas open today for the first time to the public, who were offered tours, with entertainment in the garden, and refreshments.
They are planning to open a cafe selling all of the produce, and use the building as a workspare and events venue too serving London's freshest foods grown on the farm.
The urban food project aims to prove that farming can be sustainable, and exploring methods including hydroponics, where crops are grown in water, and aeroponics, where they are grown in air.
FARM:Shop is just a few metres from the new Dalston Junction
Underground station.
Something and Son's Paul Smyth told the Hackney Gazette: "I think it's a lovely idea of being able to come along to see some of the more wacky ways of urban farming, as well as doing it yourself at the same time.
"It is also about restoring part of Hackney and bringing old buildings back into use."
Throughout November the FARM:shop will be open for a tour on Fridays to Sundays at 1pm.
Add FARM:shop to Facebook to find out about forthcoming events.
