Gillett Square - worthwhile investment or waste of money? What do YOU think?
By citystudent | Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 16:26
Hey everyone,
Been doing an informal survey in Dalston about Gillett Square.
What do people think of it?
It never seems to be busy unless there is an event and several people I spoke to either hadn't heard of it or did not go there?
They said that visitors come from outside Dalston, but residents don't visit much? Is that true?
And am I right in thinking it was the council who funded the project? If so, and Dalston people aren't using it, seems a bit of a waste of money?
What do you think - lets start a debate!

I go a lot its a beautiful space...why should it be busy all the time is it not quite nice to have a bit of empty space in the city? The little market booths have won awards why don't you check out the architects website that designed it tinyurl.com/y9cwcd7 If you want the car park with all the druggies and drunks back i'm sure the council would consider it.

Reportcitystudent - i always find it empty as well. It could be worse i guess, I find the "shanty town" look they have given half of it kind of bizarre... maybe they were trying to be modern?
Apparently it used to be a car park before it eventually became what it is (tinyurl.com/yamhrhs)
Interesting perhaps if you look at something like the Booth Map 1898 that the square was just another terraced street, there is no historical basis for a square there or a reason why people might use it.
Anyway I would be interested to see what you dig up...

ReportI've been there a few times, for various events, including dance and an art installation. It doesn't seem to work very well as a public space, and on most of my visits I've found it disappointing. It still feels like a car park....
