St. Matthias Club fomerly St. Matthias Boys’ Club is a registered charity, which has served 8-20 year old boys in Hackney for a generation, catering for their recreational needs and supplementing their education with organized, disciplined and above all friendly environment.

Its structure, aims and activities are relevant to today’s teenagers. A view borne out by its ever increasing membership.

In one of the poorest areas on the United Kingdom, where constructive recreation is scare, and usually too expensive, the Club’s importance cannot be over-estimated.

The club was founded in 1968 by Nelson Riley, and the Rev. Ray Philips, the then Vicar of St. Matthias Church in Hackney, hence the name. The Club became an affiliate of the London Federation of Clubs for Young People in 1970.

We used the St. Matthias Church Hall until the Rev. Philips left in 1978. The Club was fairly nomadic between 1978 and 1984, using several church halls. In the meantime several appeals for help in finding permanent premises were made in the local press.

Harry Goodman who grew up in Hackney heard of our plight and came to the rescue through the London Federation of Young People (formerly the London Federation of Boy’s Club) putting up the bulk of the money to enable the club to move into its present premises, 101 Dalston Lane, Hackney E8 1NH. Funding was also provided by the Metropolitan Police Property Fund, Variety Club of Great Britain and Mr Joseph Levy.

The Club was officially opened by H.R.H Duke of Edinburgh in October 1984. The Club used to boast a membership of some 287 boys with nearly 200 actively involved in a wide variety of sporting social and educational activities which the Club offers. Although the building is not very large, the boys utilize it to its full potential.

The Club was briefly closed and inactive for a few years from 2007-2010. Previous club members and employees are now re-launching the club on 7th Jan 2011 as a sports academy, accommodating and coaching youngsters with sports aspirations and ambitions. The Club also welcome new members who wish to participate in sporting activities to maintian a fit and healthy lifestyle.
