Las Parrandas de Remedios, a solo exhibition by Cuban photographer Alejandro Gortazar, is a celebration of Cuban identity and solidarity set to coincide with the London Commission of Enquiry for the Cuban Five. The artist captured this spectacular collection of photographs during the annual celebrations in the small town of San Juan de los Remedios, a music, lights and fireworks event which takes place on 24th December each year.

“There is music everywhere, traditional food and jubilation fill up the village and its vibration can be felt for miles around”.

The famous tradition of Remedios finds its origins in the early nineteenth century call to Mass, which was celebrated from 15th to 23rd December. The event see two groups, “San Salvador” and “El Carmen”, confront each other as contenders on opposite sides of the town’s central square where they battle with their music, colourful lanterns, monumental carriages with intricate light displays and fireworks.

“In this competition there are no winners or losers, the celebration always wins: the beautiful traditional scene of art and folklore, which are the Parrandas, legitimate pride of the Remedianos”

Born in Havana, Cuba, Alejandro Gortazar had an extensive career in his homeland as a professional photographer and journalist, before moving to London in 2009. His profound understanding of light, colour temperature and definition creates timeless images of ever-changing environments and cultures. He has come to be known internationally for his ability to create photographs often mistaken for paintings, and the striking collection of works in this exhibition will not disappoint.

RSVP to attend the private view on Thursday 6th of March, 6:30 – 9.00pm at 13 The Gallery. This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet the artist who will guide you through these powerful images of Cuban identity. The exhibition runs until the 28th March and limited edition prints will be available to purchase.
