Notting Hill Carnival Organisers Pushing to Keep The Event On

Notting Hill Carnival organisers are undergoing talks with Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council to asses whether the event can take place this year.

Notting Hill Carnival - will it go ahead this year?
The organisers are trying their best to prove to the council that they would be prepared for trouble, in the wake of the London riots last week.
Although there was no trouble in Notting Hill during the riots, members of the public are nervous that the carnival may lead to further risks. The carnival has always had a reputation for trouble and crime. Many carnival attendees will remember the 2008 Carnival riots on the Monday evening, right at the very end of the weekend, involving large numbers of youths and injuries to police.
Organisers of this year's Carnival are working hard to ensure it still goes ahead. The event is estimated to bring approximately £93,000,000 into the local economy.
The Londonist reported that Notting Hill Carnival director Ancil Barclay said:
'We do not have the final say, we have to demonstrate to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea that we have reassessed our plans and convince them we have put systems in place to deal with any unplanned event.'
Twitter user MartinSenyszak said yesterday, "[It would] Be a real shame if it didn't go ahead."
A final decision is yet to be made - we'd like to know what you think?
Should Notting Hill Carnival go ahead? Would you attend if it did?
We are still gutted that Good Times soundsystem with Norman Jay isn't on this year anyway!

It hasn't been particularly prominent in the press but I live in the area and saw the damage first hand and have a google news alert - 'riots notting hill' - set-up which is how I came across this piece. From the point of view of the participants, it would be a great pity if it didn't go ahead, but the public safety issues have to considered - as always - I think people will still come but less than usual and if that's the case it might even be more enjoyable. I have been to the carnival several times including 2008 but won't be this year - nothing to do with the riots though. Thanks for your piece anyway ...

ReportOh really? We missed that! I don't think it was widely reported was it? Do you think the Carnival is due to go ahead? I guess if they have already spent a bit of money preparing all the floats and acts then it should do - but will people still attend?

ReportJust to let you know that, while it wasn't nearly as bad as in some areas, there was trouble in Notting Hill - including a number of people being threatened and robbed in an upmarket restaurant, another restaurant and a pub being trashed and shop windows being smashed. As a result, there have been less tourists coming through and the locals have been keeping a lower profile as well, while many businesses either closed early or boarded themselves up, meaning a considerable loss of potential income.
